02b. Chancellor of the Order of the Thistle

Blazon of arms: Or on a bend Azure a star of six points between two crescents of the field

The Duke of Buccleuch is the 10th duke and one of the largest private landowners in Scotland with some 200,000 acres. He is the hereditary chief of Clan Scott. The courtesy title used by the Duke’s eldest son and heir is Earl of Dalkeith; and that of Lord Dalkeith’s eldest son and heir is Lord Eskdaill.

The Duke of Buccleuch was appointed as a Knight of the Order of the Thistle in 2017.

On 9 Dec 2023 the Duke of Buccleuch was appointed as the Chancellor of the Order of the Thistle. He is not, however, the senior Knight, that honour belongs to the Earl of Elgin who was appointed as a Knight of the Thistle in 1981.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor
