Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood ( 26 Sep 1748 – 7 Mar 1810 Was notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories of the Napoleonic Wars and frequently as Nelson’s successor in command.
Collingwood in the Royal Sovereign led the lee column of Nelson’s fleet at Trafalgar due to the wind and a freshly coppered bottom he reached the French and Spanish fleet 20 minutes ahead of Nelson’s column and engaged raking the Santa Ana from stem to stern causing appalling damage. Nelson said, “See how that noble fellow Collingwood carries his ship into action.” Santa Ana surrendered and shortly after Collingwood learned of Nelson’s death and took command of the British fleet.
Collingwood was made a peer as Lord Collingwood on 5 Nov 1805, but much to his disappointment, he was unable to secure a remainder to his daughters ( he had no sons) and their male heirs. He received the thanks of Parliament and a pension of ÂŁ2000 per year. That that time it was not the custom to admit a newly created peer to the Order of the Bath. After his death in 1810 he received a State Funeral.
