Members of the Scots Peerage are Armigers Too !
Since our website is concerned with Scots armigers, we thought was time for a look at a few of the members of the Peerage of Scotland.
It was decided to first to see who were the junior peers, that is who was the last peer in each grade and when they were created.
Research to this end was not straightforward or easy as one might think. The sources had omissions and errors which created complications. The sources used were the Wikipedia article on the “Peerage of Scotland”, Sir James Balfour Paul’s “The Scots Peerage”, and Fergusson of Kilkerran’s “The Sixteen Peers of Scotland”.
The information to identify the correct junior peers was a cooperative effort between John H. Gaylor, Mrs. C. G. W. Roads, Snawdoun Herald of Arms, and your editor. In some cases, the deciding factor was a one day difference in the date of creation.
The arms chosen are what we believe the then new peers used and have been illustrated with renditions from John H. Gaylor. In general, the arms have been taken from illustrations and blazons from Paul’s “The Scots Peerage” published between 1904 and 1914, but considering the very last peer’s creation in this group dates to 1707, this should present no problems.
