Former Lord Lyon David Sellar

William David Hamilton Sellar, MVO, MA, LLB, FRHist, FSA Scot, was born on 29 February 1941. He read history at Oxford University graduating with a BA before gaining a law degree (LLB) from the University of Edinburgh. Sellar qualified as a solicitor in 1966 and wrote much about the Lordship of the Isles and on the origins of many of the Highland families.

David Sellar was appointed Bute Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary at the Court of the Lord Lyon in 2001 and held this office until he was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms in 2008. Lord Lyon Sellar was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scottish Armigers in 2013. He retired as Lord Lyon in 2014. Also in 2014 he was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) and in 2016 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).

After being in failing health for about a year he passed away on Saturday, 26 January 2019, age 77. R.I. P.
