New Book on Offer
The Armorial of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount (1542)

A photographic facsimile in two volumes, The Heraldry Society of Scotland, 2018

By Alexander Maxwell Findlater

In “Lyndsay” there are 507 coats of arms illustrated of which 329 are of lairdly families. Mr. Findlater has done an enormous amount of genealogical research and assembled collected data related to these families of which he has presented much here in these two volumes. Volume 1 extends to 394 pages and volume to 372 pages to give an idea of the amount of information published. Between pages 76 and 347 are approximate 151 photo plates of the Armorial, they look to be around a solid inch thick group to me. Volume 2 is all Mr. Findlater’s family genealogy and histories & commentaries. There are additionally ,appendixes, an index and a bibliography.

Earlier facsimiles have been published on 1822 and another in1878. These are rare books and hard to find.
We have access to the facsimile of 1878 and while the plates are there nothing is told about the families !
So Mr. Findlater’s facsimile with its comments is a FIRST !

Alex Findlater is a prominent member of the Heraldry Society of Scotland. A graduate of Bristol University, a chartered accountant, and sometime involvement in the wine trade, married to Harriet Ann Hyde Parker with two daughters. He is an author of a number of books: “Aspilogia Scoticana”, HSS 2006..dealing with Scottish armorials from the earliest times to the 18th century; “Lord Crawford’s Armorial”, HSS, 2008 and
now “The Armorial of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount” ( 1542), HSS, 2018

The another really nice thing about this pair of books is that they are relatively inexpensive. And can be bought ( even with Pay Pal ) on the HSS site:

For HSS members in the UK ÂŁ58.86 and for non members in the UK ÂŁ63.86
For HSS members in Europe ÂŁ73.77 and for non members in Europe ÂŁ78.77
For HSS members in the US ÂŁ79.14 and for non members in the US ÂŁ84.14 ( And the rest of the world )
For US readers the exchange rate today at 11:30 AM is 1.28 dollars to the Pound
So for HSS mbrs that’s $101.30 and for non mbrs it’s $107.70 approximately

In my opinion Mr. Findlater has done an incredible job as author/editor and has set the stage for others to take off in researches from here.

The Heraldry Society has published a number of books helpful to the researcher a few of the most recent ones are:

The Heraldry of the Bishops of Scotland by David M. Bertie, 2018

An Ordinary of Scottish Arms from Original pre 1672 manuscripts. By Eilean and John Malden, 1916

Lord Crawford’s Armorial by Alex Maxwell Findlater, 2008
