Subject: Media Release Dr Bruce Durie has been elected a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and also a Chartered Biologist (CBiol).
These accolades by the Society’s Council are partly in recognition of his recent work in promoting education in and the public understanding of Genetic Genealogy, and in bringing together Biology, History and Education.
To quote the Royal Society, the designatory letters FRSB “signify to all that you are a professional biologist, well qualified and subject to a rigorous code of conduct”. It is granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Biology has judged to have made a “prominent contribution to the advancement of the biological sciences, and … experience in a position of senior responsibility”.
Other Fellows include Sir David Attenborough, Prof. Robert (Lord) Winston, and biochemist Dame Jean Olwen Thomas, Chancellor of Swansea University
Chartered Biologist (CBiol) status, originally designated with permission of the Privy Council, “is recognised as a hallmark of excellence in both the UK and the European Union”, is “a definite measure of knowledge and ability” and “demonstrates the achievement of excellence, the attainment of high standards of competence, the ability to exercise leadership, a high level of personal integrity”.
Dr Durie said “I’m thrilled to have been honoured in this way in my original discipline. The RSB is the leading professional and educational body in its field. I hope to use this to increase the degree of scientific rigour brought to the valuable field of Genetic Genealogy, and strip away some of the more outrageous claims made for the interpretation of the science”.

Dr Bruce Durie BSc (Hons) PhD OMLJ FCollT FIGRS FHEA FRSB CBiol, QG, originally a Biochemist and Neuroscientist, is internationally known for his work in Genealogy and Heraldry, over 30 books (including the best-selling “Scottish Genealogy” (now in its 4th Edition), his BBC Series “Digging Up Your Roots” and “A House With A Past” and his extensive speaking and lecturing among the Scottish-American community in North America.
In 2015-16 he was the Fulbright Senior Scottish Studies Scholar, researching early migrations from Scotland into Colonial America, which he held at St Andrews University, Laurinburg, Scotland Co., North Carolina, USA.
