Timothy Cardinal Dolan is an American Catholic prelate who has served as Archbishop of New York since 2009 and as a cardinal since 2012. Dolan served as the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from 2010 to 2013. After being made a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, Dolan participated in the 2013 papal conclave that elected Pope Francis. Dolan is seen as representing conservative values and has a charismatic media personality.
The eldest of five children, Timothy Michael Dolan was born on February 6, 1950, Robert (1925–1977) and Shirley (née Radcliffe) Dolan (1928–2022) .
Cardinal Dolan has submitted his resignation upon turning 75, as required by the Catholic Church, but he will continue in his role as Archbishop of New York until a successor is appointed. The timeline for this appointment is uncertain, especially as Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025 and was only buried today 26 April 2025.
