Here we have the arms of Sir Walter Raleigh which arms struck us in their resemblance to the Winslow arms.

Blazon of arms: Gules seven fusils in bend Argent

SOURCE/NOTES & CREDITS: Illustration of arms is based on the blazon from Burke’s General Armory, 1884, London, on page 836 in the righthand column. Text is developed from the Wikipedia article on Raleigh.

Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552 – 29 October 1618) was an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonization of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I.

In 1617 the King, James I & VI, granted him a pardon for his last offenses on the condition he not attack the Spanish in a venture Raleigh was to go on to Venezuela, but some of his men did, so the King had him beheaded on 29 October 1618 in the Old Palace Yard at the Palace of Westminster.

The artwork is an interpretation of John Hamilton Gaylor
