Robert III of Artois

Alternately Robert III might have had for his arms:

Azure semi fleurs-de-lys Or (France ancient ), a label of four points Gules, charged on each point with three castles Or in pale.”

The source for these arms are found in the book “The Lily and the Lion”, the sixth book in the seven book historical novel series, “The Accursed Kings” by Maurice Druon, on page 218. Wherein in these books our Roger III plays an important part.

I certainly believe both Maurice Druon and Peter Greenhill did thorough research to come up with what they did. Quite possiblly there is no absolutely certain proof or documentation for Roger III’s arms, so take your pick.

The artwork is a rendering by John Hamilton Gaylor.
