Sheriff David Wilson Bogie was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1946 and died in Dec 1999 at the age of 53 in London. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he read law and continued his reading at Balliol College, Oxford.
In love with the law, he was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1972, and as a Sheriff, he presided over courts in Aberdeen and Stonehaven from 1985 to 1997. His fellow sheriffs said of him that he was almost too kind to do the job and was regarded as “Dickensian” in manner and more comfortable with quill pens and a typewriter than computers and modern technology but that he had an able and agile mind.
He knew Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk and was one of those whose memorials of the “Ilk” was included in the short book of Sir Iain’s informal portrait edited by John Jolliffe in 1986. In fact, David’s honeymoon included a stop in Sir Iain’s small Edinburgh club Puffin’s. ( See the Ilk’s entry )
He petitioned for and was granted arms on 15 Jan 1999, in volume 82, page 35 by Lord Lyon Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight. The arms were published in “Ordinary III” on page 67 of the ordinary and Bogie is listed in the index on page 369. “An Ordinary of Arms”, Volume III, 1971-2017, was edited by Dr. Bruce Durie and published in 2022
The strongest reason for this Scottish entry is our belief that David’s arms are so simple and striking !
