Sir Duncan Campbell of Barcaldine, Bt. (1856-1926)
ARMS: Quarterly, 1st and 4th gyronny of eight Or and Sable, 2nd Argent a lymphad sails furled and oars in action Sable flagged Gules, 3rd Or a fess checky Azure and Argent, all quarters within a bordure Vair.

Sir Duncan Alexander Dundas Campbell of Barcaldine, 3rd Bt., CVO, born 4 Dec 1856 succeeded 1880, Capt. 3rd Bn, Black Watch 1881-87 retiring as Hon. Major 1893 and was a member of the Royal Company of Archers ( the King’s Body Guard for Scotland ). He was appointed as the 6th Green Rod Usher to the Order of the Thistle 1884-1895 and then Secretary of the Order 1895 onwards. Sir Duncan was appointed Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in 1909 and appointed CVO on 25 June 1909.
In 1896 he bought back the Castle and Barony of Barcaldine sold out of the family in 1842, fifty four years earlier, to continue the hereditary Keepership of Barcaldine Castle. Noteworthy, he was the author of “The Clan Campbell”, 3 vols., “Records of Clan Campbell in the Military Service of the Honourable East India Company 1660-1858” and “Officers of Clan Campbell in Army and Royal Marines from 1660-1924” ( 22 vols. MSS ). He died unmarried 27 May 1926 and was succeeded by a cousin with the baronetcy remaining extant. dqw 20100314
Note: We have just been advised by a reputable Campbell source that the Castle of Barcaldine was sold once again by Sir Roderick Campbell, 9th Bt., in 2009 after 113 years of family ownership the second time. dqw 20100317
