We have here one of those wonderful full page achievement B&W illustrations by the late
Graham Johnston, heraldic artist to the Lyon Office in the first quarter of the Twentieth Century. The original illustration is scanned from the unnumbered page between pp 172 and 173, Vol. I, “The Scots Peerage” Sir James Balfour Paul, published by David Douglas, Edinburgh, 1904
Exactly why Mr. Johnston chose to illustrate the 1st Marquess’ achievement
we don’t know, considering that it is in an article about Douglas, Earl of Angus but,
this is in fact the achievement of the grandfather of the 1st Earl of Forfar.
William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas born circa. 1589 succeeded as 11th Earl of Angus in 1611 and between 14 & 17 June 1633 was created by King Charles I as Marquess of Douglas, Earl of Angus, Lord of Abernethy and Jedburgh Forest. He died on 19 Feb 1660, age 71.
Archibald Douglas, Lord Douglas and Earl of Angus born circa 16-9 predeceased his father dying on 15 Jan 1655.
His eldest son James Douglas , succeeded his father and grandfather, was the only son of the Earl of Angus by his first wife, Anna, daughter of Esmé, 3rd Duke of Lennox. So James Douglas, 2nd Marquess of Douglas He married and had issue and his son Archibald Douglas, 3rd Marquess was created by Queen Anne on 10 Aug 1703 as Duke of Douglas, etc. And so, Archibald Douglas, 1st Duke of Douglas.
James’ half brother Archibald Douglas, son of the Earl of Angus and his second wife, Jean Wemyss, daughter of David 2nd Earl of Wemyss, was created 1st Earl of Forfar, Lord Wandell and Hartsyde by King Charles II on 2 Oct 1661. Archibald Douglas, 1st Earl of Forfar.
