Sir Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas and Lord of Galloway (1328-1400)

Arms of Sir Archibald Douglas the Grim as 3rd Earl of Douglas now sporting the arms of his wife Joanna de Moravia ( or Moray or Murray ) in pretense. the daughter of Maurice de Moravis, Earl of Strathern. They married in 1362 with her bringing Archi the vast landholding of her father and first husband including Bothwell Castle, this with the specific approval of the king who wanted the lands in “safe” hands.

Arms: Quarterly: 1st and 4th Argent a man’s heart Gules on a chief Azure three stars of the field; 2nd and 3rd Azure a lion Rampant Argent crowned Or and surtout Azure three mullets Or ( for Murray of Bothwell) .
