General Adolf Erik Ehrnrooth was born on 9 February 1905, a career Army officer, he became the last wartime commander of the Uudenmaanrakuuna Rykmentti (URR)( Nylands dragonregemente)(Newlands Dragoon Regiment) Finland’s premier cavalry regiment for the period 1944-1947 and saw to the deactivation of the URR as the last cavalry unit in 1947. A holder of many decorations but particularly the Mannerheim Cross ( equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor or the Victoria Cross of which only 191 were ever awarded) married Countess Karin Birgitte Ulrica Henny Schack, of the Danish family of counts which is closely connected to the Danish royal family, King Frederick IX attended the wedding in Finland ( need we say wedding of the year ! ). The Ehrnrooth family came from Latvia to Finland around 1660 and were ennobled in Sweden in 1687 with noble no. 1123 upgraded to Commander Family Status (*) with no. 1123A in 1801 and matriculated in Finland in 1818. (*) It is our understanding that those untitled Swedish nobles awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword, had their families upgraded to Commander Family Status and had a suffix letter added to their noble number.
