When the 2nd Duchess of Fife died in 1959, her hereditary peerages passed to her nephew James Carnegie (1929–2015), eldest son of her younger sister Princess Maud and her husband Charles Carnegie, 11th Earl of Southesk (1893–1992).
James George Alexander Bannerman Carnegie, 3rd Duke of Fife was born 23 Sep 1929. He was the only son of the 11th Earl of Southesk (1893–1992) and his wife, Princess Maud (1893–1945), the younger daughter of the 1st Duke of Fife and Louise, Princess Royal and also the younger sister of Princess Alexandra Victoria Edwina Louise, the 2nd Duchess of Fife.
James married the Hon. Caroline Dewar, elder daughter of the 3rd Baron Forteviot On 11 Sep 1956. They had two surviving children, Lady Alexandra Clare Carnegie born on 20 Jun 1959 and David Carnegie born on 3 March 1961 his heir and later as his successor as the 4th Duke of Fife.
James succeeded his father on 16 Feb 1992 as 12th Earl of Southesk and as Chief of Clan Carnegie.
James Carnegie, 3rd Duke of Fife died on 22 June 2015.
