Martin Haldane of Gleneagles

The family is Breton in origin and probably came over with William the Conqueror in 1066. William the Lion bestowed the manor of Hauden in the border country on Bernard, son of Brien, in the middle of the twelfth century and, later in the century, Sir Roger de Hauden is recorded as having a charter of lands in Perthshire. Gleneagles has never been bought or sold outside the family. In the fourteenth century the family obtained extensive lands within the Earldom of Lennox and indeed the 2nd quarter of the chief’s coat of arms represents Lennox.

(James) Martin Haldane of Gleneagles was born in 1941 and succeeded in 1994 as the 26th and present chief. The Family still lives in Gleneagles House, the present building dating from around 1650, to which the family moved from Gleneagles Castle, which is now a ruin. He is also the treasurer ( and member) of the Queen’s Bodyguard for Scotland, the Royal Company of Archers. dqw 20110907
