Name That Laird ! No. 1 Named
We have a Contest Winner two days after posting the 3rd clue.
Monsieur Xavier I. Fairforth Rippon of France “Named That Laird” correctly and also identified the four quarters of the Laird’s shield
correctly in an email to your editor on Friday, 7 Sept. 2018 with the
subject line “Very easy” !
The laird in question was/is the 1st Marquis of Huntly, Chief of the House of Gordon.
The heraldic quarters will be blazoned & identified for this laird in his entry ( see the entry for the Marquis of Huntly in the WA Auld Scots Album.)
M. Rippon indicated to me that he is not on Facebook, not a member of the SSA nor the HSS. He stated, “I am a Frenchman who has Scottish origins lost in the troubled history of the 18th century. My family is still tied to the Mackenzie clan today”.

A contest to see who can identify the Scottish laird from the arms. So far,
no one has sent in a guess as to who it might be…Maybe the 3rd Clue will
do the trick for someone to guess…
1st Clue: the laird lived in both the 16th and 17th centuries.
2nd Clue: This laird was a peer in the Peerage of Scotland and at one point was attainted …. When rehabilitated he was promoted. He was so happy with his promotion, he decorated his castle inside and out with his arms, his wife’s arms and the arms of his sovereign…
3rd Clue: The laird was born in 1562 and died in 1636. At the time he was attainted, he was also excommunicated by the Kirk. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic in France and under pressure abjured “Romanism” not once but several times. The Kirk remained suspicious… perhaps with reason as our laird died as a Catholic. King James liked the Laird pardoning him more than once and showing him favor and giving him positions.
Arms of the laird: Quarterly: 1st, Azure, three Boars’ Heads couped Or, langued Gules; 2nd, Or, three Lion’s Heads erased Gules, langued Azure;
3rd, Or, three Crescents within a Double-Tressure flory counterflory Gules;
4th, Azure, three Cinquefoils Argent.
This is one verra well known and important laird !
Interesting to see if anyone can name the families of the four quarters, too.
If no one can Name That Laird, more clues will be forthcoming as needed.
