Arms: Quarterly: 1st and 4th, argent a saltire engrailed between four roses gules ( for Napier); 2nd and 3rd, or on a bend azure a mullet pierced between two crescents of the field within a double-tressure, flory counterflory of the second (for Scott of Thirlestane).

Major The 14th Lord Napier (S), 5th Baron Ettrick (UK) & 11th Baronet of Thirlestane (NS), KCVO, Private Secretary to HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon 1973-98, died 15 March, 2012. He was 81. Francis Nigel Napier was born 5 Dec, 1930, son of the 13th Lord (Peerage of Scotland 1627; 4th Baron Ettrick, cr UK 1872); succeeded to the peerages and baronetcy (cr 1666) on his father’s demise, 1954; married 1958, Delia Mary Pearson (a Bowes Lyon descendant), by whom he had issue, 2 sons and 2 daughters. Served in the Scots Guards, was a Tory whip in the Lords and equerry to the late Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester. Appointed Princess Margaret’s private secretary, comptroller & equerry in 1973; KCVO, 1992.

His elder son, Francis David Charles, Master of Napier, b 3 Nov 1962, succeeds to the family honours.
