Arms: Quarterly, 1st and 4th Or an eagle displayed Azure and charged on the breast with a naval crown Or. ( For Carnegie ), 2nd and 3rd Argent a pale Gules ( for the Earldom of Northesk ).
Crests: 1. The stern of a battleship of the line with three lanterns all proper, inflamed Gules. 2. Issuant from a naval crown Or, a demi-leopard proper, holding a rose Argent, barbed and seeded Vert.
Supporters: Two Leopards reguardant proper, gorged of three roses Argent, barbed and seeded Vert, each sustaining a banner of St. George.
Mottoes: Over the dexter Crest, TRAFALGAR. Over the sinister Crest, BRITANNIA VICTIX. Below the shield, on a compartment of grass Vert, TACHE SANS TACHE.

John Carnegie, the 12th Earl of Northesk petitioned the Lord Lyon, Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, for a matriculation to bring his arms up to date. The updated arms were matriculated by the Court of the Lord Lyon on 16 May 1968, Volume 57, folio 49.
John Douglas Carnegie, 12th Earl of Northesk was born on 16 Feb 1895, the son of Lt. Col. Hon. Douglas Carnegie, MP for Winchester and Margaret Jean Johnstone-Douglas. John was educated at Gresham’s School, Holt and King’s College, Cambridge. He served in WW1 1914-1918, was Mentioned in Dispatches, as a Captain ( temporary Major), 95th (Hants Yeomanry) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (TA).
On 20 July 1920, Carnegie married Dorothy Mary Campion, daughter of Col. Sir William Robert Campion (Governor of Western Australia) and Katherine Mary Byron (a Granddaughter of George Byron, 7th Baron Byron. They had four Children.
In 1963 John Carnegie inherited the earldom from his first cousin, David Carnegie, 11th Earl of Northesk who had died childless.
John Carnegie the 13th Earl of Northesk, died on 22 July 1975 and was succeeded by his second son, Robert Andrew Carnegie (1926-1994) as the 13th Earl of Northesk.
