Duke of Sandringham

Clarence Marylebone the Duke of Sandringham

Sandringham is a fictional character of Diana Gabldon’s “Outlander Series”

He can be found in “Outlander”, “Dragonfly in Amber” and referenced in “Voyager” &
as in the list of characters in Gabaldon’s books in her “Outlandish Companion”, Vol 1,

His Grace’s arms are described in “Dragonfly in Amber” on page 646 but without tinctures. This was a matter of discussion between John Gaylor and myself.

Tinctures were added.

Originally the author described the principal charge as a leopard. But as we all know
in English heraldry leopards are really lions.. as in “the leopards of England” and all that.

And so the blazon became:

Gules a lion couchant Or holding in its dexter fore-paw a bunch of three lilies slipped proper.

The artwork is a rendering of John Hamilton Gaylor.
