Additional text from the Wikipedia article on the Earl of Wigtown. The title of the Earldom of Wigtown (or Wigton or Wigtoun) was created twice in the Peerage of Scotland. The first creation was in 1341 for Malcolm Fleming. A note on the arms: Wigtown: The arms of the ancient Earls of Carrick (in south-west Scotland) were argent a chevron gules. The original arms of Fleming, a family of the south-west, were the exact reverse of Carrick – simple, bold and effective for which comment I thank my friend and artist John Hamilton Gaylor.
Sir Malcolm Fleming was created Earl of Wigtown on 9 Nov 1341 by David II of Scotland in the Peerage of Scotland. He died circa. 1363 and was succeeded by his grandson Thomas Fleming as the 2nd Earl in 1363 who surrendered the title in 1372 and died circa.1382. The earldom and territory went to Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway as the 3rd holder of the Earldom. This was Archibald Douglas circa.1330-1400, 3rd Earl of Douglas. The transfer was confirmed by Robert III later in the same year of 1372. The Douglas family, the Earls of Douglas, held the Earldom of Wigtown for the next hundred years, until the attainder of the 9th Earl of Douglas in 1455.
The second creation was in 1606 for John Fleming, and survived until the death of the 7th earl in 1747, when it became dormant (or extinct).
