Boswell of Toberchurn

Boswell of Toberchurn

The 233rd Annual Mess Dinner of the Veteran Corps of Artillery (VCA) at Ft Hamilton, NY on January 14, 2023.

Colonel William Boswell of Toberchurn as a Major in the VCA (one of the eight Historic Military Commands recognized by Congress as pre-dating the Militia Act of 1792) and National Secretary of the Military Society of the War of 1812, wearing the VCA’s Mess Dress uniform, which is a War of 1812 Artillery dress uniform.

Each of the original members of the VCA was a ‘veteran’ of the Revolutionary War’ – thus the name. Their role was to protect NYC’s harbor from invasion by sea; they first saw service during the War of 1812 and have been active ever since. The VCA has both Regular and Hereditary members; the latter are descendants of Revolutionary War veterans and include such luminaries as General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and General William Westmoreland. All new members – including the aforementioned generals – enter as Privates (E-1), regardless of their military grade.
